In your journey toward healing, it’s essential to remember that perfection is not the goal. In fact, perfection isn’t even possible! Life is messy, and you have good reasons for the behaviors and choices you make. Some of those choices may be helpful, while others might be subtle habits that slow healing without you even realizing it.
As you gain more awareness around your choices, you will be able to feel clearer on which are supportive and which stand in your way. This happens as you learn to give yourself grace and understand the reasons behind your choices, as well as the consequences and results. What truly matters is that youโre making decisions that resonate with you – and that you’re comfortable with the results in terms of your healing process.

It’s very different when you make a choice from a place of clear-seeing versus behaviors that arise as a matter of habit or unconscious response.
In my experience working with clients and in my own yoga therapy practice, Iโve noticed that certain habits can slow down healing. If you notice these behaviors occurring, try not to get down on yourself. These are simply opportunities to get curious about how these habits that slow healing affect how you feel. Then, you can choose them intentionally (or not) based on what you need.
Common Behaviors That Slow Healing
- Strictly Following a Plan Without Flexibility
Sticking rigidly to a plan or template without considering how you feel moment to moment can be counterproductive. Yes, it’s helpful to develop commitment to the healing process. Itโs important to listen to your body and adjust as needed. Rigidity is one of the most common habits that slow healing. - Pushing Yourself to the Limit
Whether itโs in your therapeutic yoga practice or everyday activities, constantly operating at full capacity can lead to burnout and slow down any healing progress. It can be harmful if you push too hard. Balance is key. - Overloading with Multiple Approaches
Trying too many things at once can overwhelm your system and make it difficult to determine whatโs actually benefiting your body. Focus on a few strategies and assess their effectiveness. Then try something new if that feels right. - Avoiding Help
Many of us shy away from asking for help, thinking we should handle everything on our own. (Yes, Iโm guilty of this too!) Donโt underestimate the power of support and guidance from others. As a Yoga Therapist it’s my job to support you, so let’s work together to identify and shift habits that slow healing and find what truly supports your growth. - Neglecting Sleep
Skimping on sleep is a common pitfall. Remember, quality sleep is crucial for recovery and overall health – both physical and mental. A wide range of symptoms will worsen if you’re short on sleep, and it can also affect your performance. Prioritize rest as part of your healing process to avoid one of the most overlooked habits that slow healing.
