Overcoming Flexibility Fears in Yoga Practice
It’s a common misconception that you need to be flexible to practice yoga or that you might be not flexible enough for yoga at all. This myth can deter many folks from exploring the transformative benefits of these practices, leading them to believe that it’s an activity reserved for those with naturally limber bodies. However, the truth is that yoga is for every body regardless of shape, size, ability, gender, or race.
As a yoga therapist, I have worked with clients who need to stay in a chair or bed, clients whose movement is limited by pain or other health conditions, and those who have tighter or stiffer bodies. There is always a way to practice yoga that honors where you are.
The Reality of Flexibility in Yoga
While it’s true that certain yoga classes may require a certain level of flexibility, it’s crucial to remember that yoga itself is inclusive and adaptable. Many people, including those who believe they are not flexible enough for yoga, often feel hesitant to participate. As someone who doesn’t consider myself naturally flexible, I completely understand this concern. The fear of embarrassment or exclusion can seem like an obstacle, but it doesn’t have to prevent you from experiencing the benefits of yoga.

My Approach to Yoga Therapy
In my yoga therapy practice, flexibility is not a prerequisite – even if you’ve ever thought you’re not flexible enough for yoga. My philosophy centers around meeting you where you are, both physically and emotionally. The goal is to create a safe and supportive environment where you can engage in practices that feel good and support your healing journey. Through personalized approaches, we can discover movements and poses that are accessible and enjoyable, often leading to increased mobility and comfort over time. We can also do breathwork (pranayama) and meditation practices that can help you reduce symptoms and improve how you feel.
Finding Your Yoga Practice
Don’t let your current level of flexibility be a barrier to finding a yoga practice that suits you. There are countless styles and approaches to yoga, and together, we can explore what works best for you. If you have specific needs or concerns, I encourage you to reach out. I’m always available to discuss any challenges you might face, and together we can brainstorm creative solutions to ensure you have a fulfilling practice.
