Why Rest Is Just as Important as Movement
If youโve been following me for a while, you know how much I advocate for intentional rest. While it may not seem as exciting or glamorous as physical movement, rest is incredibly powerfulโpossibly even more soโwhen it comes to healing and maintaining long-term health.
But hereโs the challenge: rest is hard.
In our culture, taking time to rest is often stigmatized. It feels like weโre expected to always be on the go, striving for more, doing more. As a result, resting can feel selfish or even impossible. For some, it can feel downright unsafe to slow down. Weโre so conditioned to be productive that we often push past our limits without even realizing it.
Thatโs why starting a regular rest practice may require more support than youโd think. If rest feels foreign or out of reach, youโre not alone. The good news is that small, intentional steps can make all the difference in shifting your mindset and building a restorative routine.

2 Essential Elements of a Strong Intentional Rest Practice
When it comes to building a rest practice, two key ideas have been game-changers for me and my clients:
1) Rest Needs to be Intentional
Resting only when youโve collapsed from exhaustion isnโt the kind of replenishing rest that truly heals and restores. Thatโs survival mode. Intentional rest is about taking time to rest before youโre depleted – when you still have energy left in your tank. This proactive approach helps build inner resources and supports vibrant health. Just as you donโt wait until your car is running on fumes to refuel, you shouldnโt wait until youโre completely burnt out to rest.
2) True Rest Means Quieting the Mind and Senses
Intentional rest isnโt just about giving your body a break; your mind and your sense organs also need time to rest. This is why zoning out in front of the TV or scrolling on your phone isnโt always fully restful. Itโs easy to forget that what we take in through our senses (whether itโs noise, bright screens, or information overload) can deplete our energy just as much as physical exertion. Thinking about the ways you stimulate or soothe your senses is a crucial part of getting effective rest.
